Friends of Portland Public Library works to further the mission of the Library and promote community engagement among the Library’s diverse users.Friends of Portland Public Library is an independent organization.


We work closely with the Library’s Board of Trustees and staff to support and enhance the Library system.

Portland Public Library is Maine’s oldest and largest public library system. Governed by a 16 member Board of Trustees, the Library is a non-profit organization. The Library’s mission is to serve the Greater Portland community by providing a diverse collection of books and other resources, with access to information resources worldwide. The Library’s services support the educational, informational, and recreational interests of all community members. The Library is a public-private partnership that receives annual operating support from the City of Portland, the State of Maine, Cumberland County, and gifts from businesses, foundations and individuals.
